Skiing and snowboarding are the number one outdoor winter activities in Steamboat, but have you ever considered a diversion from the ski slopes? If so, try spending an exciting day fly-fishing the Yampa River. Yes, fly-fishing in the winter months happens every day and for the many frequent visitors to Steamboat, fly-fishing has become a must-do activity that offers a break between ski days.
There are a few ways you can go about enjoying a day on the river if you're interested in trying some fly-fishing during your vacation. The best part is that you don't even need to have fly-fishing equipment with you! For the adventurous or more experienced anglers you can rent gear and buy flies at Straightline Sports, ask for some fishing advice and hot spots, and fish the Yampa River as it runs through downtown Steamboat Springs. This downtown section of the river has a handful of warm springs that flow into the river, which can keep the river from freezing in the winter, especially between 3rd & 13th streets. The fishing can be very good and is easily accessed by foot along the bike path.
My suggestion for a memorable day of fishing is to experience the Yampa River with the help of a fly-fishing guide. A guide will give you the local's knowledge of the area so you can spend more time fishing rather than searching for where the fish may be hiding. A guide also provides all the equipment and flies necessary, eliminating the need for you to bring your own. More importantly, a guide is your instructor for the day. Much like a ski instructor, a fly-fishing guide is there to increase your knowledge and teach you more about the sport.
For many anglers, winter is a special time of the year to go fishing. The snow creates a quiet solitude not experienced any other time of the year, and we can see some of the largest fish of the year caught during the winter months. Plus, when with a guide, you may access many of the private river sections and ranches available by means of snowmobile. This offers a unique experience by itself!
The next time you're looking for a day of rest from the slopes think about fishing. Whether you are an occasional fly-fisher, avid angler, or someone who has never fished but is intrigued by the sport, a winter day of fishing could be the highlight of your vacation!
